Portmap and NIS/YP
Author: .daniel.schrock

I have recently implemented NIS/YP on my internal network and ran into a few peculiar issues with portmap. I also use NFS quite extensively. My public systems are also connected to the private network via vlan interfaces. To keep nfs and portmap traffic off of the public network, i used the portmap -h ip_addr to bind portmap to the internal network. When specifying the -h flag it includes 127.0.0.1 in the list...supposedly...

Unfortunately when the -h flag is set, NIS can not register itself with portmap and will fail.

once the flag was removed, NIS worked like a champ.

Another note... although not specified in the NIS chapter of the handbook or anywhere else on the internet, NIS works fine with blowfish password encryption.
