 The ports collection - searching
Author: Christian L.

I've gone through the FreeBSD Handbook and other sites and have not been able to find an answer to my questions.

1. The tag for CVSUP'ing my system is set to RELENG_4:
*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_4

I thought the system would then download the sources to upgrade to 4.0-stable from 4.0 release. Instead it went to 4.1-stable. Is this normal?

2. Is there an easy way to find out what file belongs to what port in the ports collection? Specifically when I upgraded the fetch program has become broken (weirdness in general) and want to go back to the older version that came with 4.0-release. The trouble is I cannot find what port is belongs to.

1 - Yes. That's normal.

2 - fetch is broken. see my recent article on that. It's not a port. It's source code. I just grabbed the 4.0 from one of my older boxes. In response to your query, here's a link to the fetch I'm using on my box.

<a href="ftp://ftp.freebsddiary.org/pub/fetch.4.0-stable">ftp://ftp.freebsddiary.org/pub/fetch.4.0-stable</a>

Copy this file to /usr/bin
cd /usr/bin
mv fetch fetch.doesnotwork
mv fetch.4.0-stable fetch

then fetch should work. let me know. cheers.

Fetch seems to be working (the one that came with 4.1-STABLE). It determines that the file is truncated (it thihat some ports are absolutely huge) and then goes on to a different site to get the appropriate file(s). It also says that the -b and -t options are depreciated. Ah well, c'est la vie. Will install the older version from 4.0. Thanks.

Yes, it does appear that fetch is working properly. But it is reporting an error. Unfortunately, the <a href="http://freshports.org/">freshports</a> can't tell the difference. It sees that fetch has failed and stops. That's why I'm using the FreeBSD 4.0-stable version of fetch.

The fetch fix is being worked on. Watch this space.
