I am installing a firewall and my employer wants to implement content filtering. Does anyone have any suggestions? I told them we could monitor where people have surfed to daily, but cannot block it as they are doing it. But they are convinced there has to be something out there.

Thank you for any help.

Define content filtering.

BTW: I do understand that Squid can be configured to block access to various website. And it can provide detailed logs as to who went where and when.

Hrmm...are you trying to prevent people from hitting sites unrelevant to their jobs?
In that case, you might as well block all access to the outside and cache all the relevent pages somewhere that the people can access them internally.
Personally, I'm against any sort of filtering in the work environment. Its counter-productive. Maybe that is a result of having a great employer that feels every employee should have administrative rights over their own system and that we use the honor system to filter our surfing...use common sense and get your job done.
For the most part this works very well. Sure, there are a few bad seeds that try to see how far they can get, but those people don't last very long. All in all they feel that if the employees are happy, the company profits.
Hardcore filtering != happy employees

By using squid and logs, the employer can determine what sites you have been visiting. They, as they are providing the service, have every right to this information. If you're found to be surfing porn sites at work, then it's bye-bye and good luck to them.
