 Printing and Apsfilter

I have an Epson Stylus Color 400 which is shared via Samba with 3 winblows boxes an d a Linux box. In winblows the printer prints fine, I have printed .gif, .jpeg, .bmp, MS Word docs, MS Excel Spreadsheets, and html files direct from Netscape. My printcap file is very basic, it has on section for
lp | local line printer:
I haven't set up the printing on the linux box yet, but my gut feeling is it won't be easy.
Anyway, On the FreeBSD box the printer is attached to I can print only ascii files, and when I made a test page called test.txt it printed fine from kedit, but when I tried to print the same file from AbiWord it was converted to ps first and gave me several pages of garbage. The test file is 10 sentences, line1 line 2 line3 etc etc. I can't print anything else.
I installed Apsfilter from the ports collection and ran
./SETUP and printed a real nice full color test page, a postscript file. Now I go back and load the very same file in ghostview and try to print I get many pages of garbage. My print cap was modified with about 4 more sections and still nothing but plain ascii tiles print.
If someone could lend a helping hand here I sure would appreciate it. I want to be able to print graphics of differant formats from gimp, xv, electric eyes, and ps files, plus the usual stuff - email, web pages, etc. Oh, I do have ghostscriipt installed, also from the ports collection.
