 simple (stupid) $ about logs

I'm running BSD 4.0. Occasionally on my screen an error will appear listed failed ftp login. Shouldn't that information appear in my security log (it doesn't) As a matter of fact I can't find it any of my logs, just on the screen.

yes this is very annoying expecially in BitchX

wat chew wanna dew is ...

have log messages point to a log file not being printed on your screen

in the /etc/syslog.conf

your will see configurations pointing to 'root'

instead of a file or directory in /var/log

read 'man syslog' for more information

editing syslog.conf is messy the sytnax is far from any other
confguration file you've edited

but once you get it down you'll know how to point logs for say telnet or ftp ssh into a single file for auditing you might be surprised to find out whose been try or has connected to yer bawx!

The solution is not to be logged in as root.
