Concluding your server is pointing at invalid ports is not logical.

Try telnet like this:

[dan@ngaio:~] $ telnet mx1.hotmail.com 25
Trying 65.54.244.8...
Connected to mx1.hotmail.com.

quit

You should get similar. If not, there is something somewhere blocking your outgoing connections to port 25.
