depending upon your $PAGER, you can just use "n" to see the next search pattern. to search backwords, say from current screen to previous, use "?" instead of "/". if you press "n" (after "?"), search is still done backwords.

"n" & "?" work at least w/ less as $PAGER. less is part of freebsd, i think at least from 4.5-stable.
