It seems like something awfully wrong happened after you installed the extra fonts - the screenshots look horrid. Have you tweaked the font settings?
I'm not using KDE, but I am using exclusively webfonts on my desktop with windowmaker & gtk/gtkstep.
Could it be that it picks by default the mozilla fonts which are really designed to work around Netscape's problems?
If you don't plan to use netscape, I suggest you don't install netscape and build webfonts without the netscape aliases...

PS - here's my font path, give it a try, and try using arial or verdana for widgets, they look really nice on screen even at very small sizes:
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/webfonts/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/sharefont/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"

Screwed up previous comment - the following:
"If you don't plan to use netscape, I suggest you don't install netscape and build webfonts without the netscape aliases..."
Should read:
"If you don't plan to use netscape, I suggest you don't install mozilla-fonts and build webfonts without the netscape aliases..."
This doesn't mean that Netscape would suck completely if you do this - I am using 4.7x occasionally and it looks very nice, although the netscape aliases along with something like this:
*documentFonts.foundry*netscape:
*documentFonts.foundry*webfonts: ignore
In ~/.Xdefaults helps a lot...

Cheers.
I have changed my FontPath directives around. I also added a DisplaySize to my config file. I've updated the article with this information and added two more screen shots. Thank you for your advice.
