Great article - one question

Hi Dan,

Thanks for a great article, and congratulation with your debut(?) at Onlamp.

As you might remember, I use Amanda, but you almost convince me to try Bacula. There is one thing I can't figure out. Does Bacula use tar or dump to grab the files on disk, or is it a "native Bacula" methode to do this? One strong point of Amanda is it's ability to use Gnutar, tar, or dump, so you don't need Amanda to restore.

I know this isn't a support forum, but I think others might ask this as well.

Bacula uses its own format. Tar is rather limiting, and tar can vary greatly from one OS to another. It's much easier and more productive to use a different format.

Yes, you still need Bacula to restore. You can use the command line utilities: bls and bextract to get things out of a backup.
