well now that you have shown me how to totally screw up my box with portupgrade... is there any way that i can undo it so that i can have my applications work correctly again. there is little i would sacrifice over security (like patching applications) but I must admit: working applications with lesser security is better than one that dont work at all because portupgrade fried them
so please, if you will... what is the command now to undo your advice or running portupgrade?

My advice? What, in particular did you do?
Without knowing what's wrong, I can't help you. "totally screw up" doesn't tell much.
Portupgrade, like any tool can be used to mess thing up.
