Failed to run Gnome or KDE
Author: Xtender
Date:   16-09-05 20:26

Hi! I'm a newbie to BSD. Needless to say I don' t understand much of X Windows. I have installed X11, configured it as described in handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.IS...k/x-config.html) and then installed Gnome. After that as it is written in handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.IS...ook/x11-wm.html) I added the following line into .xinitrc:
% echo "/usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session" > ~/.xinitrc
After that I saved the changes, typed startx an received the following message:
%: not found
After that I tried to run KDE. Added the following line to .xinitrc:
% echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc
The same effect: %: not found.
Here is my xorg.config file contents:

the .xinitrc should contain:

/usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session

or for KDE:

exec startkde

The echo lines are the commands you would use to create the .xinitrc if you didn't want to use vi or some other editor.

try this and you will see what I mean.
at the command promtp type the following:

echo "Only this phrase between the quotes will be in this file" > testfile
cat testfile

Oh, thanks! Luckily I already write you from Mozilla in Gnome, not XP, but that thing with echo command really was a source of mistakes!
echo THANKS!
