 Seting up Comcast Cable Modem
Author: William Evanson
Date:   20-09-04 09:03

I just setup my cable modem on my computer. It is a USB Motorolla SB4200. I see the Cable modem listed in dmesg.boot as ugen0. Since I don't have a NIC on my machine to act as an interface can I still do the DHCP command and pick up an IP from the Cable Modem. How does this work?

As far as I know you need a network interface card in order to use the cable modem for comcast. After installing the nic use sysinstall and goto the network config page.

Then pick the nic card from the probed list state no to the ipv6 and yes to using dhcp for ipv4. I am not sure if using dhcp will pull your primary and secondary dns names so you may want to write those down before going thru the whole process.

I use Comcast as my primary means to getting on the internet. I have more then one computer on the modem and use a router with DHCP enabled. Having a router with a firewall built-in may be the best "route" to go. Plus you could get a wireless router if you have a laptop with wireless abilties. I would let the router handle the DHCP connections much easier to deal with. Suggest using Dlink products.
