the handbook is the clearest but i can help you if you need.

update your sources with cvsup (optional)
cd /usr/ports/net/cvsup-bin && make && make install
cvsup -g -L2 -h cvsup8.freebsd.org /usr/share/examples/cvsup/4.x-stable-supfile

wait

cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf
sound support usually is pcm
cp GENERIC MYKERNEL
grep pcm LINT >> MYKERNEL
this takes the line with pcm and adds it to your kernel.
you could then edit MYKERNEL and remove such things as scsi controllers you dont have, ipv6, etc.
config MYKERNEL
see if you have any syntax errors, etc and fix them. if you do, config again
cd ../../compile/MYKERNEL
as config tells you
make depend && make && make install && shutdown -r
you're done

make a file, call it whatever you want. or call it 4.x-stable...

*default host=CHANGE_THIS.FreeBSD.org
*default base=/usr
*default prefix=/usr
*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_4
*default delete use-rel-suffix
src-all

then, cvsup this file

in both the handbook and at <a href="http://freebsddiary.org/cvsup.html">http://freebsddiary.org/cvsup.html</a>, it mentions this file:

/usr/share/examples/cvsup/standard-supfile

Read one of the above to see what to do with that file/
