I have recently bought the FBSD 4.0 Power pak (10cds), I have looked everywhere (at least I think) but is there a master index file or something for the CD-ROM contents? Lets say I want to build a port, this get very annoying when the distfile are located on CD-ROM 6 but the port itself is on CD-ROM 5 (or something like that). So I copied the ports skeleton to my HD, still each port has a different CD. When making a port, it's annoying to have to go thru 5-6 CD's just to find the CD that the distfile is located on. No I dont' want to copy the distfiles to my HD and I have 56k so fetching from ftp.freebsd.org is not going to work either. Am I doing somethign wrong? what is an easy way to make sure my distfiles and my ports match up? or is the cdrom supposed to have the ports and distfiles on the same cd? (i could be looking/doing it wrong...what CD number would this be??) Any help/hints would be helpful, remember this powerpak has 10 cd's.......6 of them are toolkits (what are those??? still confused) and 4 are FBSD distro, which cd's should I use for ports? etc.etc.etc. Thank You Much

I'm guessing, but isn't there an index file with each CD? I remember seeing something like the last time I looked for some packages.

I just checked cd 1 of toolkit and cd 1 of freebsd 4.0 OS, none have the INDEX file which you are talking about. I see some file called INDEX.but that wasn't plain text, was in some weird format, and I couldn't figure out how to read it.............well.i guess i'll continue mount/umount cd's until i find the cd with the distfiles i need................

I am looking at CD3 of FreeBSD 4.0. In the main directory, I see filename.txt. The first few lines of this file are:
README.TXT
packages/All/AbiWord-0.7.6.tgz
packages/All/CHECKSUM.MD5
packages/All/ImageMagick-5.1.1.tgz
packages/All/Mesa-3.0.tgz
packages/All/ORBit-0.5.1.tgz
Isn't that what you need?

I haven't bought any FreeBSd CD in my life, but when I created my own CD's I used the first one for the base system, and the hole
binary ports collection went on CD 2 - X starting with "/packages/all/A*" and finishing
with "/packages/all/z*". If I were looking for a binary port say "root-kit-2.3.10" I went to
a CD which coverd "r" in its package interval. I think the most FreeBSD off-line distros are made up by much the same way, but they should put a "INDEX" file on each CD in "/packages/all", if they don't "/stand/sysinstall" will have trouble finding anything.
But there is a much better way to update ports, use CVsup and make the ports on our own, that gurantees to have the lates stable port and, since you get everything as source, reduces trafic. It's also much more flexible if you need to patch/fix some sofware manualy.
As to the "toolkits" tell us some thing about what's on those CDs, they may by network tools, web-applications or eventualy development tools.

Yes.......those files are there, but it is only for that CD, that is now use since ls works just fine. I need/wonder if there exists something like index.txt that says cd-1=thisfile.zip andthisfile.zip cd-2= anotherfile.zip onemorefile.zip etc.........well i've looked can't find one..so I guess i'll continue/build my own list of what cd has what files............................................<think> cd-rom.com/walnut creek should label their cd's better...cuz "distfiles" ain't a good label when you have 10 cd's.</think>

The beauty of cvsup is that you don't have to do it all at once. cvsup once a week, and you'll be quite current. Arrange a cron job for it to run late at night. Or use nice to have it run while you are already logged in. You can kill cvsup at any time, and restart it later, it'll pick up where it left off (more or less).T

Quit correct, thats why I don't any problem
doing it on 56K as well. I do it on ISDN
(1 B Channel only) back at my parents main
"Houshold" system as well, never had to wait more than 2h, not even when I went from 3.4 to 4.1.1, to retrieve the hole tree.
Saludos Ben
