 DNS Setup
Author: mark

I have a dedicated server running FreeBSD 4.7 and I need to set up 2 nameservers on the machine to run the control panel I have chosen to use. How do I set up the nameservers. I have a block of 10 IP addresses and the server is located at one of them. I have installed BIND 9 and now I do not know where to go from here. I have registered the domain and also registered the nameservers with the main IP address and one of the other ones. How do I set up the DNS on the machine so that I have the name servers running? Please help!

Thank you,
Mark

This is linux-centric, but this page should help you get started:
www.crazysquirrel.com/linux/dns.php

Some of the boot startup instructions should be adjusted for FBSD.
You should check the Topics section of this site, too.

I am not sure what you are doing, but a word of caution.

The reason for two name servers is availability. If one is not available, the other is. If both name servers are on the same box, that defeats the original purpose.

Hey

The only reason we may be fanatics . . . on the software and subject, is because it's works great, and the big one, "no security" flaws unlike the latest in binds history of flaws:

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/CERT/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-02:43.bind.asc

Some people might like bind and thats ok with me, I just would like to be able to share my success with the subject of djbdns with someone that might want to try it. Just like people want to spead the word of freeBSD, "which they should". Same concept friend !

Best Regards

Aaron
