 Secondary DNS -> Working DNS?
Author: nitor
Date:   03-02-03 11:12

Hi,

I thought the slave DNS would be the backup DNS if the primary DNS crashes.

So I modified my resolv.conf file and tried a nslookup but it wont work:

*** Can't find server name for address aa.bb.cc.dd: Server failed
*** Default servers are not available

The db file is OK, this means the slave DNS got the DNS from the master and apparently port 53 is opened on the slave DNS.

Why isn't it working ?

Thanx

You need a host name associated with IP address aa.bb.cc.dd.

it has an hostname.

If I type 'hostname' on command line it returns the name I use to access the http or ftp server.

You need a host name associated with the IP address.

hostname returns the name of the host. Let's assume it returns nitor.example.org.

You need to have "host nitor.example.org" return an IP address. Therefore, your DNS zone file, which relates host names to IP addresses, needs an entry for your host.

If you posted a copy of named.conf on the master and slave and your zone file, it would help for us to see if there are any errors in your config.
