 postfix startup on FreeBSD 5
Author: dave
Date:   28-01-03 18:30

Hello, I followed the article on installing postfix under FreeBSD. I'm installing on version 5. On boot up i'm getting errors from sendmail, even though according to the article it is not suppose to run, about invalid sendmail flags. When i check ps output after login postfix is indeed running. Is this sendmail invalid flags error normal? Thanks.

in rc.conf you can put

sendmail_enable="NONE"
or
sendmail_enable="NO"

I usually do the later...

According to /etc/rc 4.x, setting sendmail_enable to no or none no matter which but YES (or yes or combinations thereof) disables it.

There's a difference between NO and NONE. Setting sendmail_enable
to "NO" disables network access to sendmail. "NONE" disables
sendmail.

Hi, Ok, now i'm really confused. In the article it says set sendmail_enable="YES" so do i set it to "NO" or "NONE"? Thanks.
Dave.

dan, good to know. thanks.

dave, from your post
"even though according to the article it is NOT suppose to run"
I though you wanted to disable sendmail, weather or not postfix needs it, I am not sure...

you might want to take a look at http://www.postfix.org/faq.html#sendmail_incompatibility

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the clarification between the two sendmail options. I've tried setting sendmail enable to yes and no, however i still get sendmail/postfix errors on startup. Any other ideas please Email me direct. Thanks. Dave.

Try setting this in /etc/rc.conf:

sendmail_enable="YES"
sendmail_flags="-bd"
sendmail_msp_queue_enable="NO"
sendmail_outbound_enable="NO"
sendmail_submit_enable="NO"

And make sure /etc/mail/mailer.conf looks like this:

sendmail /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
send-mail /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
mailq /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
newaliases /usr/local/sbin/sendmail

You might also want to set the following in /etc/periodic.conf:

daily_status_mail_rejects_enable="NO"
daily_status_include_submit_mailq="NO"
daily_submit_queuerun="NO"

FWIW these settings are what I use, they work for me.

/D

Have you searched this website for postfix? Startup is covered.
