 telnet and pop take forever
Author: Ivan
Date:   30-12-02 05:10

Recently, my server started acting strangely.

When I try to telnet to the machine, the login: prompt takes forever to come up. The same thing happens with poping and getting e-mail.

Once it connects, the speed seems fine.

Any ideas?

Ivan

Delays such as this are often the result of a DNS problem. Check that the IP adddress and hostname resolve to something valid. Do this for both the client and the server.

Perhaps adding entries to /etc/hosts will be sufficient for what you need.
