I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "all of this", but all you need to do to resolve hostnames is enter your ISP's DNS servers into /etc/resolv.conf . It's been a while since I used Linux, but I believe you do the exact same to get DNS working.
Here's an /etc/resolv.conf file for reference:

search mydomain.org
nameserver 24.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver 24.xxx.xxx.xxx

The first nameserver is my ISP's first nameserver and the second one is the alternate nameserver.

If you don't have access to an upstream DNS server, then you will need to run your own DNS, but this is almost never the case.
