where to put the mail server.?

right now i have a gateway(natd) and natd.cf routes to my mail server which is internal, otherwise i dont get incoming mail... running nmap on my gateway... i am able to route to my mail server... which is bad, imho... so f it i'm thinkin' put the mail server outside the gateway and let the end users imap to that... i ran a test mailserver and it works just fine... what do you think about this.? which way would you run it (internal or external).?
