 Extending a file system
Author: Keith

At our school we run sendmail on FREEBSD. We have 2 2gb hard drives and on one drive we have a 200mb /var file system. In /var we have mail and it is full. Consequently our users cant receive mail. There is still 1.3gb of free space on the drive but it is in the /usr file system.

How can we get more space for users mail without rebuilding?

kill the sendmail process so no new mail can be delivered. also disable anyone from checking mail.

Then...

cp /var/mail /usr/var/mail
mv /var/mail /var/mail.old
ln -s /usr/var/mail /var/mail

Once you're happy that it's working..

rm -rf /var/mail.old
