 Desktop Security?
Author: Joe Kiser

Hi all,
I have a FreeBSD box which I'm running as a desktop computer. Nothing fancy, just a 56k dialup which boots FreeBSD (for internet), and Windows95 (for games).
My question is this: is it safe for me to comment out all the internet daemons (telnetd, ftpd, etc) from /etc/inetd.conf? I don't plan on anyone accessing this computer (in fact, nobody should since it's only a dialup).
Also, are the passwd files in /var/ftp/etc the same as in /etc? Somebody once ftp'd to my computer when I was just starting out on FreeBSD and downloaded the password file from there. Are those real password files, and if so, can people use password retrieval programs on these files if it were downloaded?
Thanks. . .

<I>My question is this: is it safe for me to comment out all the internet daemons (telnetd, ftpd, etc) from /etc/inetd.conf?</I>

Sure is - as a matter of fact as basic rule of security is to "deny all which is not explicitly allowed." In this case you don't want to allow anything so you should feel free to comment these services out of /etc/inetd.conf.

<I>Also, are the passwd files in /var/ftp/etc the same as in /etc?</I>

Nope.

Nothing to worry about there either.
