Why Apache!!!???
Author: blowfish

Why only choose Apache for web server?

There're other choices. I particular like Roxen (http://roxen.com/) , an opensource web server, with tons of features, including multi-languages support, MySQL, IMAP, FTP, supports, simple, easy browser configuration and admin. All without messing around with modules.

It even has a FreeBSD port forthe latest 2.x release.

Free for commercial and personal uses.

Apache is extremely popular. So what! The most popular doesn't mean the best.

What prompted your message? Who has chosen only Apache? Or are you merely mentioning other options?

Just mentioning other options. :-)

There're quite a few others too.

But it seems to be Apache and IIS are all you hear...

I would guess because relatively speaking Roxen (and friends ) are pretty new to the scene. Apache has been around since ~ 1994. Before that there was just NSCA and CERN webservers (and Netscape's stuff). I remember it took awhile for Apache to get going as well. Originally it was NSCA with a bunch of patches (hence it's name A-Patchy-Server). Then people started adding stuff to it (like SSL, etc..) and it took off...

Roxen will do the same if it's any good (never used it myself) but will probably have a somewhat harder time since Apache is a pretty dang nice server...

If you write a good article about why one should use something else and provide installation and configuration examples, I'll publish it.

Well... Yes, Apache has been around for a long time. But shouldn't we move to something
better, or at least easier, simplier to use when they comes up, instead of just business as usual?

Things move on. Everything must pass. Time waits for no one, and nothing.

That's call progress. That's why now we have *BSD, Linux, etc., instead of the old DOS, Win... etc. Correct? :-)

Maybe I will.

In fact. I'm building a new box (waiting for a few parts right now) as a web server, running FreeBSD 4.x(What else? One of my fav. OS. :-)) and MySQL and Roxen.

I'll try to document all the steps. I've done it on a SuSE Linux box for a friend already. imapd, ftpd, mySQL, all under control from Roxen.

But unfortunately. I didn't document the process that time. :-(

Sure, although I would argue that Apache is good, easy, simple, etc... :) I've been doing web development since 94 and haven't found a reason to switch... not that this means I won't at some point, but so far it does everything I want it to do...

Also - BSD has been around a LONG time... you could argue that it's been around the longest... BSD (unix at least) was around long before DOS/Win...

Apache was good, until something better, easier, simplier comes along. :-)

Yeah. My first e-commerce site went on line in the fall of 94. My personal multi-media site went on line in the spring of 94.

Ran the Netscape secured server on Sun Sparc Solaris.

Got out before the dot-com craze dot-gone. :-)

If you put it in the Diary Template format, it will be published much faster than if I have to translate text to html.

see Get your stuff published here for more information.

thanks.
