>What is the difference and why is most of the ports using gmake?
linux's make is gmake as far as i know. freebsd's make is from back in the att days, according to the man page. the makefiles are written completely differently (so they are not interchangable) gnu utilities (autoconf, automake) make gnu makefiles .
>How does one go about loading the libraries once they are built without this handy config file sitting the /etc directory?
man ldconfig? not really sure on this one. you could add script to set ldconfig with rc.d or a shell script with kde is fired up first. (not really an idea way, but i'm not sure without a ld.conf))
>What is going on with this port???? It seems that even some of the old FreeBSD guys are having problems with this port. It is all over the mailing list.
it works fine for me, sorry.
>What patches are needed to get KDE on FreeBSD working?
I would start with the patches from the port even if you're not using the port. if this isn't an option, try gmakeing it, see what breaks, and try and fix it.
i hope this helped in some way,
