That is the problem, there are times in which this is not an option,

1. Staying current with KDE.
2. Wanting to install in a different directory other then the default directory.
3. Packages not available(see 1.)

What if you wanted to build a fancy new application, for example Kaptain is a universal graphical front-end for command line programs.
Do you wait for the port or package? If you try to build it with the standard source code provided by the author if will fail unless you have the answers to my last posting.
