I need to allocate a second IP address to a NIC - any ideas

Look at the ifconfig command. You can alias multiple IP addresses to one interface(nic). Do a man ifconfig, but basically the syntax is ifconfig interface address alias. Where interface is your network interface, address is the network address, and alias is a keyword.
