Hello.

I am experience troubles getting apache to start up. The httpd is located in the /usr/local/sbin directory.

When I enter the command ./apachectl start , it says httpd could not be started.

Huh?
I also have set it to start automatically in my /etc/rc.local file.

The document I modified is the httpd.conf doc with respect to servername , setting it to my IP address.

Help!!

Thanks in advance.

1 - check /var/log/httpd-error.log for the trouble. Setting ServerName entry in httpd.conf is a good idea. Try also 127.0.0.1 if you need to. Also, make sure hostname is set. Type "hostname" to see the existing value. "hostname myhost.mydomain.org" to set a value. Check /etc/rc.conf because it should be in there too. Something like hostname="ducky.nz.freebsd.org"

2 - don't use /etc/rc.local as it's deprecated. See <a href="http://www.freebsddiary.org/boot.html">http://www.freebsddiary.org/boot.html</a> and <a href="http://www.freebsddiary.org/ipfilter333.html#configuration">http://www.freebsddiary.org/ipfilter333.html#configuration</a> for examples of how to use /usr/local/etc/rc.d instead.

You can also run:
apachectl configtest

This will give you output if there are errors in your httpd.conf file. If all is good then you will get 'Syntax OK'

IIRC this feature was added in 1.3.16? Or something like that. I've lost track of the versions.
