Alright. when i do startx or initx the screen is so huge its unusable. its crazy. when i run XF86Setup it looks great everything works in there. i have tried to do each of the mode settings (resolutions) but none fix it. i have noticed my grapihcs card is Intel 810 and there is no driver for it. but how come XF86Setup can run just fine and then XFree86 itself cant??? i have searched everywhere for the driver but cant find it. any help at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance if you do help. (plz do) sorry for being stupid if its easy. im new to BSD

at HTTP:///www.xfree86.org/4.0.2/Status17.html#17

Driver Status for XFree86[tm] 4.0.2 : Intel
Previous: Integrated Micro Solutions (IMS)
Next: Matrox
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17. Intel

3.3.6:
Support (accelerated) for the Intel i740 is provided by the XF86_SVGA server with the i740 driver, and for the Intel i810 with the i810 driver. The i810 is currently only supported on Linux, and requires the agpgart.o kernel module in order to use modes that require more than 1MB of video memory.

4.0.2:
Support (accelerated) for the Intel i740 is provided by the "i740" driver, and support for the Intel i810 is provided by the "i810" driver. The "i810" driver is currently Linux-only, and requires the agpgart.o kernel module.

Summary:
The i740 and i810 are supported in both versions, but the i810 is only supported on Linux/x86 platforms at present.

If you do not need to run in a high res with lots of colors (colours), then why not try to run in VGA, or SVGA mode. It should work, I know used to run in 640x480 with 16 colors (colours) a very long time ago.

In the worst case, you can always change your video card.

FreeBSD like other BSDs should support some sort've Gnu/Linux emulator (Gnu/Linux Libs, GTK libs, etc). You should be able to run the Gnu/Linux verison of XFree86. Not sure how well it will work under the lastest version of FreeBSD, I know under 3.2 it worked really well. This may solve your problem....if you try it, and it works...please let me know. If it dosen't maybe you would want to try it under another BSD.

It says 10 replies hahaha but i only see 3 hmm well either way thank you for the response and i will try the linux emulation. ugh too bad i have 56k. and since i cant get modem to work yet i guess i have to transfer over disk to BSD partition AHHH or i might just burn a CD. hehe whatever works will work. thank you again. and i have tried the resoultion and VGA SVGA stuff but i will try again before i try the emalation.
