how to stop ppp dialing to sendmail to localhost
Author: unwired

Small problem.

ppp is dailing out every morning at 2:00am to deliver the 'automatic' system status messages to root (default install 4.2 release). I've changed my filters in ppp.conf so that port 25 isn't supposed to allow a dialup. But it's still happening.

One thing I have noticed though is the e-mail is going to "root@www.blahblah.com.au" which is the hostname I've set my system up for. Instead of say "root@localhost", so I have a sneaky feeling that the DNS is causing the dialup.

Anyone know of a way to stop this without denying DNS to start the dialup?

Thanks,

Just a guess but do you have an entry in your /etc/hosts for

127.0.0.1 www.blahblah.com.au localhost

I would guess that you need it if you don't have it.

Are you using the -auto flag in ppp? It's been a long time since I used PPP but if I remember correctly, that causes it to automatically dial out when necessary. I suppose you want to keep this functionality for other times when you need Internet access. I was going to suggest that you take the -auto flag out.
