 Cvs for the first time

I haf recompiled my kernal in freebsd4.2 adn i intend to update my sources and recompile the whole system for the first time..according to the frebsd handbook,i haf to make changes to the /etc/make.conf...but i can't find the file under /etc.....and about the cvsup file,do i haf to rewrite myself or i jsut issue "cvs -standard-supfile" supplied according to my needs?..thanks in advance/
