FreeBSD 4.x blows Linux 2.4 out of the water
Author: Kremlin
Date: 28-01-01 06:52

Finally, some well-done, careful performance testing by objective independent party that shows what we've all known -- that FreeBSD blows Linux 2.4 to shreds. Filesystem performance, nfs performance, parallel compile time, and database performance - FreeBSD has the edge! Linux 2.4 is somewhat better in http server performance, but not by much.

At http://innominate.org/%7Etgr/slides/performance/img7.htm it appears they tested Linux 2.2, no mention of 2.4

Damn, hit Post instead of Quote..

I meant to add... later in the article (i.e. next slide), they refer to 2.4

But performance under stress isn't why I use FreeBSD. There are other, often, subjective areas in which I prefer the BSD model over the Linux model.

Please. Let's leave the OS wars to slashdot. This place is for helping. Not bickering.

I agree completely.

Thanks Dan.

Well, let's give credit where credit is due. Linux 2.4 seems to outperform FreeBSD in the postgresql database test and blow the pants off FreeBSD in the http server performance.

Otherwise FreeBSD clearly wins in filesystem speed, parallel compile, and maybe nfs.

You have to ask yourself what you want your system to be doing (database serving? web server? nfs server? desktop?) and then decide which characteristics are better for which OS.

Neither Linux nor FreeBSD is a clear winner in all categories, lets at least be honest here.

There's likely a very good reason for the filesystem performance issue. This article was linked on Slashdot some time ago, and the general consensus was the Linux performance figures were consistent with DMA not having been enabled on the hard drive.

Finaly Mr. Langille said something right. I agreed 100% with Mr. Langille, there is too much garbage on this site. Leave the Garbage to the other sites. The only sites I have seen this much garbage, is on this site and the Pro-Microsoft sites. This place should at least make an attemp to redeem it self among 'Profellsional' sites. It has gone down since last april.
