For the Admin - Comments on Phorum
Author: el_kab0ng

I finally decided to make a spiff board as an addon feature to a File Repository script built in PHP that I use here internally. In any event, I liked this forum enough that I decided to give it a shot.

I'd like to say that I tip my hat to you mr Admin. Phorum has been a bitch to install, and the support for it sucks. It seems to be a real touchy application, and if one can just get through the installation, then you'd definitely want to leave it alone. I finally understand where the "I don't have time to fix the email notification" came from. After dealing with this thing for more than 4 hours, I'm about ready to drop kick my server out the door.

It's not *that* difficult to install it. If I can do it, it can't be difficult. Did you see <a href="http://freebsddiary.org/phorum.html">http://freebsddiary.org/phorum.html</a>?

I think a cool feature would be the ability to edit messages you have posted.. maybe.. to be able to go in and update info on a problem or answer.

of course there are downsides.

As it stands, I did manage to get the phorum system up and running...but not without what I would consider major code alterations.

Aside from the email feature NOT working (which I plan to fix and release to you tomorrow should you be interested) the forum is 99% functional. Cosmetically speaking it will take some work, but I hope my days of rewriting their code are numbered.

What major code changes?

Well, for the most part, I had to rewrite alot of the "include" statements in the admin section. It seems the relative path to the admin directory hosed a few things in common.php:

include "$admindir/login.php";

now became:

include "/path/to/login.php"

If I tried to set the path in the common.php to the "relative path", it would hose my admin links.

It seems I'm not the only one who suffered from "inclusion" errors.

There were other things that had to be tweaked, but I can't remember ll of them right off hand....

I never had that problem. I suspect something else was causing the problems.

Maybe...but I scoured the support phorum and there were similar incidents... When you upgraded, did you actually replace the whole thing? Or just run the upgrading script? Maybe the older versions, however insecure, were more stable...

(or maybe it was originally coded for PHP3 and then later ported to PHP4 standards...losing something along the way...)

not really sure... bottom line is, it works now...and looks halfway decent. I only wish I could show you guys...but it's internal LAN only...=/
