Can't mount zip disks on da0 ... pls. help!

I'm hoping someone here may be able to help me out. I installed FreeBSD 4.1.1 a couple of days ago and have the following problem... I can't mount zip disks (dos or ext2) on my zip 100 SCSI drive. I've recompiled the kernel with ext2 support and can mount my linux HD no problem, but when I try to mount a dos zip using

mount -t msdos /dev/da0s4 /zip

I get "Invalid argument".

The drive is recognized at boot, comes up as da0, and I've spent the last two hours reading usenet archives trying to find an answer. I found other people with the same problem, but no answers.

I did format a zip and create a UFS filesystem on it, which mounted fine. Do I need to add something to my kernel configuration? I've tried /dev/da0s1 ,s2, s3, as well as da0a ,b, c, etc. to no avail.

I would be grateful for any help on this

I had created the dos filesystems on my zip disks using linux fdisk -- none of them worked. When I formatted one at work today on a Win9x machine, it mounted fine under FreeBSD.

However, I still can't mount ext2-formatted zips under FreeBSD, though I can mount my ext2 hard drive. Any ideas there? It gives me a message about unsupported features.

So far I'm loving FreeBSD -- SBLive works great, adsl setup was a piece of cake, and the ports system is nothing short of amazing. This website is great -- full of projects to keep me busy over the Christmas holidays.

If anyone has any info on the ext2 zip disk thing, please let me know.

In case anyone else is trying to mount ext2 zip disks, this command (supplied by Michel Talon in comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc) works like a charm:

mount -o ro -t ext2fs /dev/da0s1 /zip

Just thought I'd pass it on...

Glad that your introduction to FreeBSD hsd been positive. Long may it continue.

Thanks for the good words about this website. It started as my log book. It still is. The key point being that man pages are no substitute for pratical examples. I'm one of the biggest users of my own website (as verified by the webserver logs).
