It's my knowledge that rpc.statd must be started BEFORE nfs.. didnt this cause any problems for you using your script?

No problems I've seen.

The script I created was taken directly from /etc/rc.network, and it starts things in the same order as /etc/rc.network. Please have a look at that file and let me know if my script is any different (in order of starting things). I don't think it is.
