I have the same error message. But I installed, Gnome instead of KDE. It was this morning at 02:00 or so, I thought I made a mistake. I have try reinstalling XFree86, and even try chose differnet video drivers, fonts, KDE, Gnome, etc...but the same error message.

I figured it out.
pkg_delete XFree86 and go install XFree86-4 from /usr/ports/x11
FreeBSD4.2 seems to come w/ 3.something which is apparantly fubar
XFree86-4 is giving me a different error. config errors. heh.. but those i expected =)

I've gotten the same error, but I've found it's related to the security level that I set... I've tested levels 2, 1, 0 and -1 and the only one X will work on is level -1... I haven't tried XFree86 v4 yet... But that's my 2 cents...

I have tried the differnet levels of security, and for me it was all the same error messages. Even after reinstallinng 4.2 (Fresh) with the lowest security level. I even changed the filesystem to 777, and same thing.

The problem with KDENABIO and the security level is that KDENABIO is a video card call. The security level is a kernel security level, it means that on level 1 and 2 you cannot make direct requests to certain peripherals. at level -1 everything works fine, but you should have a strong security (ipfilter/ipfw) if your machine is on the net frequently/accessed by remote users, mostly if they/you use X.
