Are you using the ports tree? http://www.freshports.org/databases/postgresql84-server/ indicates that 8.4.9_2 is the latest version of the port.
It looks the issue you are having was fixed on 20 Oct 2011 22:07:29
Perhaps you need to refresh your ports tree and try again.
