Perhaps your ISP is blocking outbound port 25.

dayum that was fast response. No. I can telnet to the server using the DNS name (www.iamentity.com) no problem. yet if i try to telnet to 25 on the remote host (hotmail, etc) i get a no connect. thus my server is pointing at invalid ports. Apparently. This even has my systech confused. I can email you login info for my server if you wish to take a gander. Also MSN contact would be appreciated.

Concluding your server is pointing at invalid ports is not logical.

Try telnet like this:

[dan@ngaio:~] $ telnet mx1.hotmail.com 25
Trying 65.54.244.8...
Connected to mx1.hotmail.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 bay0-mc2-f5.bay0.hotmail.com Sending unsolicited commercial or bulk e-mail to Microsoft's computer network is prohibited. Other restrictions are found at http://privacy.msn.com/Anti-spam/. Violations will result in use of equipment located in California and other states. Sat, 28 Jul 2007 13:17:36 -0700
quit
221 bay0-mc2-f5.bay0.hotmail.com Service closing transmission channel
Connection closed by foreign host.
[dan@ngaio:~] $

You should get similar. If not, there is something somewhere blocking your outgoing connections to port 25.

First, try other mail servers. If you cannot connect to them on port 25, I would start suspecting your ISP. Here are a few examples to try. If none of them work, talk to your ISP about outgoing port 25.

[dan@ngaio:~] $ host microsoft.com
microsoft.com has address 207.46.197.32
microsoft.com has address 207.46.232.182

[dan@ngaio:~] $ telnet maila.microsoft.com. 25
Trying 205.248.106.64...
Connected to maila.microsoft.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
