 FreeBSD 6.2-Prerelease rc.conf problem
Author: sonicseaweed
Date:   20-11-06 22:24

Hi,

I upgraded to FreeBSD 6.2, and everything is working fine, except the startup.

When the system starts up, the main services start (SSH, postfix etc), however, non of the local startups run. I am using the same rc.conf that I used in FreeBSD 5.4.

I have scanned all the log-files, but I cannot find any indication that something is failing.

Any ideas?

my rc.conf (I removed the netconfig stuff as I don't want that to be public)

clear_tmp_X="YES"
clear_tmp_enable="YES"
chkprintcap_enable="YES"
linux_enable="YES"
sshd_enable="YES"
usbd_enable="NO"
local_startup="/usr/local/etc/rc.d"
mysql_enable="YES"
apache2_enable="YES"
apache2ssl_enable="YES"
samba_enable="YES"
saslauthd1_enable="YES"
postfix_enable="YES"
courier_authdaemond_enable="YES"
courier_imap_imapd_enable="YES"
courier_imap_imapd_ssl_enable="YES"
courier_imap_pop3d_enable="YES"
courier_imap_pop3d_ssl_enable="YES"
fang_enable="YES"
cupsd_enable="YES"
lpd_enable="YES"
quota_enable="YES"

What local service are not starting?

With 6.x, most files in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ need an entry in /etc/rc.conf to enable them.

It is not enough to just have the startup script. You have to add the *_enable entry to /etc/rc.conf

For example, to get mailman to run:

mailman_enable="YES"

non of the scripts in /usr/local/etc/rc.d that are also listed in rc.conf are being run.

mysql_enable="YES"
apache2_enable="YES"
apache2ssl_enable="YES"
samba_enable="YES"
saslauthd1_enable="YES"
postfix_enable="YES"
courier_authdaemond_enable="YES"
courier_imap_imapd_enable="YES"
courier_imap_imapd_ssl_enable="YES"
courier_imap_pop3d_enable="YES"
courier_imap_pop3d_ssl_enable="YES"
fang_enable="YES"
cupsd_enable="YES"

all the above scripts are located in /usr/local/etc/rc.d but the only one that is starting up is postfix. All the other scripts in /etc/rc.d are starting just fine.

I probably should mention that running these scripts manually works fine (i.e. there is nothing broken in terms of those services or the startup scripts themselves). But of course, I want the system to start those up automatically after a reboot (or power outage).

You don't need postfix here. It is started by the base system. I hope you have set the entries in mailer.conf. See http://www.freebsddiary.org/postfix.php

Let's start with that and see if we can get Postfix running first.

I cannot restart the computer at this exact moment to test it, but I will move the postfix script to /root just in case I need it later and should I move the qmail.sh script as well?

[18:50:07]root@cs:~# cat /etc/mail/mailer.conf
#
# Execute the Postfix sendmail program, named /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
#
sendmail /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
send-mail /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
mailq /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
newaliases /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
[18:50:17]root@cs:~#

When I was setting up postfix I let it edit mailer.conf for me, so I assume that this is correct...

Thank you, I should have read the whole document like I have now.

apparently I needed the postfix script there. I found that the qmail.sh script caused trouble (and it seems, was unneeded).

In short, the scripts are being executed (at least some of them), but errors are occurring. The biggest problem is that the errors are not logged. I have to physically be at the computer to see which scripts fail =(

I will set rc_debug="YES" in rc.conf and try that out tomorrow. maybe then I will get a clearer picture (I somehow missed that option before when I was reading the man page for rc.conf).

I appreciate all the help

I disagree that you need a postfix script there.

BTW: you are running both postfix and qmail at the same time. Why? Normally, you cannot run two mail servers on the same machine without jumping through some hoops.

See the thing is, qmail is not even installed, so the script obviously fails to run properly. Furthermore, it's not even in my rc.conf file. I cannot even tell why it tries to run it.

Postfix does not start without me running the postfix script.

I enabled rc_debug in rc.conf, hoping that something would be written to the logs, and there was

one line that caught my eye was

whereas I had quota_enable="YES" in my rc.conf file.

What's going wrong. I don't see any errors per se. And it does not even look like it is trying to run apache or samba.

It tries to run it because /usr/local/etc/rc.d contains the qmail. NOTE, a script must be RC compliant in order to take notice of _enable entries in /etc/rc.conf. Your qmail script may not be so.

I apologise. Yes, I have a postfix startup script too, and yes you need it. Sorry.

Those two differ. I suggest checking all entries in /etc/rc.conf and see if there is a corresponding entry in /etc/default/rc.conf. Perhaps you have copy/pasted from the previous version of FreeBSD. Ignore the _enable setting when doing this compare.

I have no idea what is going on.

Please, let us concentrate on one app at a time. Let's go for Apache. Work on that one.

The default is no, you can remove the above.

Why do you have this? I see no reason for it.

I suggest commenting out the above until you get postfix working.

You don't want that for postfix. You want what is shown here at http://www.freebsddiary.org/postfix.php:

postfix_enable="YES"
sendmail_enable="NO"
sendmail_submit_enable="NO"
sendmail_outbound_enable="NO"
sendmail_msp_queue_enable="NO"

And in /etc/periodic.conf (which you may need to create):

daily_clean_hoststat_enable="NO"
daily_status_mail_rejects_enable="NO"
daily_status_include_submit_mailq="NO"
daily_submit_queuerun="NO"

I suggest commenting out the above until you get postfix working.

AAAHHHHHHH what pain and sorrow comes with finding the answer.

Ok, so here is what my problem was. For some reason the /etc/defaults/rc.conf was not overwritten during the upgrade. By replacing that file with

/usr/src/etc/defaults/rc.conf

everything just worked....beautiful!

Well, thank you Dan for your help and patience, it really helped.

Glad you found it.
