We are trying to install ffmpeg on freebsd 4.11, but my sys admin says there is no ffmpeg.so for freebsd.
Can anyone help me get this installed. It's needed to make stil frames from video files in certain software.
Any help is appreciated!

Use the ports.
I suspect your sysadmin does not know enough about FreeBSD.
Do this:
cd /usr/ports/multimedia/ffmpeg/ && make install clean

ffmpeg is installed its the avifile that we are having trouble with:
/usr/ports/multimedia/avifile
make install clean
then this file can't be found:

Your ports tree is out of date. You need to cvsup your ports tree. You should be seeing this:
$ cd /usr/ports/multimedia/avifile
