Try this command:

du -hd1c

h = human readable sizes
d1 = just give me the totals for depth 1
c = give me a total at the end

This will give you the amount of space used in each directory in the current working directory. For exampe:

[root@ngaio:/] # du -hd1c
2.0K ./.snap
1.5K ./dev
14K ./tmp
8.5G ./usr
41M ./var
1.6M ./etc
2.0K ./cdrom
2.0K ./dist
898K ./bin
64M ./boot
3.2M ./lib
270K ./libexec
2.0K ./mnt
2.0K ./proc
3.2M ./rescue
92K ./root
3.8M ./sbin
8.6G .

That's from a FreeBSD 6.0 box.
