Your gateway can't be on a different LAN. It has to be on your LAN. That's the definition of a gateway. AFAIK.
Try giving us some IP numbers to show us what you're working with. cheers.

Ok, my lan is 63.x.x.128 with a netmask of 255.255.255.128 and my ISP told me that my gateway is 209.x.x.15. Seems pretty simple, I know for a fact that windows 98 can handle this. However freebsd doesnt like it one bit. Do you know of a way I can get this to work? Thanks

maybe 209.x.x.15 is the internet gateway of your ISP, if you want to build a LAN gateway maybe you could try this http://www.freebsddiary.org/gateway.html I follow it few days ago and it works, :)

Try to traceroute from the 98 machine to a ip address. The first hop is going to be your gateway..
