 VPN problem pptp cores
Author: cali

Hello,

I'm trying to access a VPN from FreeBSD.

I read the article and made this config:

XXX:
set authname NAME
set authkey PASSWD
set timeout 0
set ifaddr 0 0
set mppe
add 10.0.0.3/24 HISADDR
alias enable yes

But obviously NAME and PASSWD were the ones provided by the network admin.

I tried it with and without the "set mppe" line.

Every time I run

/usr/local/sbin/pptp 10.0.0.3 XXX

Two instances of pptp start and can be seen in top

doing "ifconfig" gives

sis0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 10.10.11.124 netmask 0xffff0000 broadcast 10.10.255.255
ether 00:00:XX:XX:XX:XX
media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX <full-duplex>)
status: active
lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000
tun0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
Opened by PID 556

but after about 30 seconds pptp core dumps

Terminated
kernel: pid 571 (pptp), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped)

I konw the PIDs don't match, its from different runs because the first time I didn't do ifconfig fast enough. I'm not sure they match in the general case, because from my dmesg it says

pid 546 (pptp), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped)
pid 559 (pptp), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped)
pid 571 (pptp), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped)
pid 594 (pptp), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped)
pid 611 (pptp), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped)
pid 660 (pptp), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped)

and no PID 556 can be seen, which is wierd, but I'm assuming this is normal. Note there are so many listed because I tried it a few times.

I'm running

FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE #0: Fri Feb 20 11:21:05 GMT 2004 xxx@:/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/XXX i386

I know this is OLD but upgrading would be a lot easier if I could get internet access. I'm at the moment writing this from the windows boot and I've been having to use windows more and more...

What could the problem be?

FreeBSD too old?
pptp version wrong? (I'm pretty sure its the latest, dl from sourceforge and compiled)
some other network problem?

Also I'd like to ask another question. Assuming I get it to work and this tun0 interface comes up, how do I actually use it for the internet connection, do I have to do something like

add route default tun0

?

I'm not sure how that is supposed to work.

Please let me know if you can offer me any guidance as to how to solve this VPN problem.

Regards

cali

I don't understand the sentence "what does ipsec say is md5 setup correctly your cert"

I setup webmin, what a cool program, unfortunately it told me that the vpnclient module wasn't supported on this operating system
