 Static IP and SSH Conflict
Author: bwiggins

I give up !! I need help. We set up bsd with DHCP and we could SSH into the server and everything worked fine. We changed it to a static IP and it works fine with devices on the same Cisco switch, but if I configure the gateway in rc.conf or add it manually with "route add default", we can then ping the server from anywhere on the network, but we cannot connect with SSH. If I add the default route (gateway) in rc.conf, the bootloader locks up running the sndmail script.

I've looked for anything that would cause a conflict but Ive given up. There's got to be something I'm missing. I'd appreciate it if anybody's got any suggestions I could try.

You haven't provided enough information to solve the problem.

You should start by providing ifconfig output for the network devices of client and server, netstat -r output for client and server, and elaborate on firewall options used in the server and the topology of the network the systems are on.

It seems to me that "We changed it to a static IP and it works fine with devices on the same Cisco switch, but if I configure the gateway in rc.conf ... we cannot connect with SSH" indicates to me that the problem may not be on the BSD box, but rather in the other network hardware/software or in the network settings you are attempting to use. If your BSD box can route on a DHCP leased address, but not a statically entered address, I would first double check that the router is in fact configured to route static addresses on whatever net address range you are using, and that no other machine on the network is already using the desired address. Then I would proceed to further probing.
