 FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE Upgrade?
Author: el_kab0ng

Finally got 5.4 where I want it after running 4.8 for so long and now they release 6.0 to compete with Open/NetBSD's release schedule.

So far nothing 6.0 does (other than a few bug fixes) is blowing my skirt up. Would the ever-so-wise folks who are currently running FreeBSD 6.0 give me some insight as to why I would want to upgrade to 6.0 from 5.4? I'm running 5.4 in a server capacity (ala sans X), so the additional wireless support (as well as the multiple proc support) doesn't do anything for me.

There's quite more than 'a few' bug fixes, and that's probably reason enough to move forward if you can. Personally, I have been running -CURRENT on my box at home to take advantage of the cutting edge atheros support. Now that it is available in 6.0-RELEASE and 6-STABLE, I will probably start tracking STABLE. The bottom line is that bug fixes = stability and performance gains. If this is less important to you than having the machine running, then don't upgrade. There are plenty of people and organizations still running FreeBSD 2.2.8, 3.4, or 4.11 for this very reason.

Yesterday I had a FreeBSD 2.2.8 box "call home" about a power failure. I have not seen or worked on the box since 1999. It told me it had a little over 1300 days of uptime before the power outage.

It also told me it had some problems with the /named slice...

Looks like no more DNS for them!

-Kahn (wondering if they got it back up or not)
